Parents talk about NCLB
Published by BoardBuzz: NSBA's daily weblog January 19th, 2006 in UncategorizedDid Congress adequately involve the public when it passed No Child Left Behind? Many do not think so. The Public Education Network is hosting 10 public hearings around the country, asking parents what they think. Here is a report from a meeting Wednesday in San Francisco. Clearly, many parents are either not happy, confused about what NCLB aims to accomplish, or both. The next NCLB public hearing PEN is organizing is January 27 in Detroit. Details here. Testimony from each hearing can be found here. NSBA’s proposed changes to NCLB aims at improving, not avoiding, accountability by:
• Improving the accuracy by which NCLB defines adequate yearly progress (AYP);
• Strengthening the alignment between the required sanctions (remedies) and the educational needs of the individual students;
• Granting the Secretary of Education greater flexibility to approve effective and innovative state accountability systems.
Details about NSBA’s NCLB improvements are here (pdf).
