The good folks at 37signals announced back on Nov. 18 that the basic level of their Basecamp web-based project management product will be free to teachers :

"If you are using Basecamp in an educational setting (k-12, college, or special education) drop us a line and we’ll comp a Basic level account for you."

This is a $24/month account that can support 15 projects and unlimited people and clients. If you’re interested the post is here. They don’t say how to "drop them a line", but if you’d like a top-notch project management tool valued at $288/year, you’re probably motivated to get it done.

BTW: I applaud 37signals for this effort, but caveat emptor. School employees would be well-advised to check this idea out with the person responsible for enforcing their acceptable use policies. Districts have been known to disallow the use of non-district-provided web-based services.
