A (Literal) Computer Crash
Published by Chronicle of Higher Education January 6th, 2006 in UncategorizedIt’s a scene that a Godard-obsessed student filmmaker might conjure up: A group of students standing on the roof of a building, dropping old computers onto pavement 60 feet below. But when the scene played out this week at Chadron State College, the masterminds behind the camera weren’t young wannabe auteurs–they were officials from the institution’s public-relations department.
And the footage they were shooting won’t end up in an arthouse film; it will be used to illustrate the evils of movie downloading. The Motion Picture Association of America is sponsoring a contest in which it asks college students to create films demonstrating the perils of online piracy, and Chadron State may have its finger on the pulse of what Hollywood wants — explosions yea, subtlety nay.
