More school boards are creating citizen advisory committees, David Ernst, director of communications for the New York State School Boards Association, tells the Binghampton Press & Sun-Bulletin. A new advisory committee set to debut in January in a school district in that area “will give advice on district finances, building needs, programs and ways to be more efficient,” the paper reports.

“Some school districts in the state make advisory committees part of their operations, while others form them in response to particular issues, Ernst said… School boards must make it clear such committees are only advisory, Ernst said. And they run the risk of provoking anger if they appear to ignore committee recommendations, he said. But he added: ‘I think on balance districts involved with them think they’re good things.’”
